TAROM is the flag carrier airline of Romania. Its main base is Henri Coandă International Airport, Bucharest. The airline operates scheduled domestic services and international services to Europe and the Middle East. It is owned (91%) by the Romanian state (Ministry of Transportation). The name TAROM is an acronym for Transporturile Aeriene ROMâne (Romanian Air Transport).
Tarom traces its origins to the year 1920 when the French-Romanian Company For Air Navigation, (CFRNA) was formed. The airline used French built "Potez" planes to carry passengers and mail, from Paris to Bucharest, stopping in European cities en route.
TAROM has today a fleet of 16 aircraft (5 BOEING 737-300, 4 BOEING 737-700, 7 ATR 42-500). By law, TAROM S.A. is Romania's national airline, a commercial society with state-owned and private capital, providing air transportation on domestic and international routes, on both regular and charter flights. The TAROM shares are owned as follows: 92.63% by the Romanian State (the Ministry of Transportation), 5.42% by ROMATSA (Romanian Air Traffic), 1.43% by the "Muntenia" Private Financial Investment Fund and 0.52% by Romanian Civil Aviation Authority.

In 1997, TAROM has launched its "frequent flyer" program, named SMART MILES.
SMART MILES program gives TAROM passengers the possibility to collect and spend miles worldwide on TAROM network. Using our partners' services, as mile suppliers (Sky Services, Hotel Crown Plaza Bucharest, TAROM Tours, Continental Hotel) passengers can earn more miles. These miles can be converted into awards such as: round-trip free tickets, companion tickets or gift tickets.
To challenge the increased competition in worldwide, TAROM has adopted a new marketing strategy, with a top priority interest in the quality of services and an increased fleet utilization.
